Vinyasa Flow Yoga
Vinyasa flow, sometime referred to as power yoga, is a class designed to stimulate the cardiovascular system as well as incorporating a variety of postures which target the various parts of the body.
Vinyasa is a term synonymous with sun salutations, a sequence of postures performed in a specific order that generate prana, the subtle energy which activates the psychic body.
Sun salutations are an effective way of loosening up, stretching, massaging and toning all the joints, muscles and internal organs of the body. Its versatility and application make it one of the most useful methods of inducing a healthy, vigorous and active life while, at the same time, preparing for spiritual awakening and the resulting expansion of awareness.
In a typical vinyasa flow class, vinyasa is alternated between static postures creating a flow of movement that engages the practitioner to merge with their breath and develop a deeper understanding of how to unite body and mind in the physical practice.
A solid understanding of sun salutation is recommended for this class.
Yin Yoga
Yin is the moon: feminine, stable, unmoving, conserving and tranquil. Yang is the sun: masculine, fire, rapidity and movement.
Many forms of Yoga practiced today are Yang (flow, vinyasa, Ashtanga). Yin Yoga differs from Yang styles of Yoga in that it focuses on the ligaments, tendons and fascia in the body. By gently stretching connective tissue the body responds by making the tissue stronger. In Yin Yoga, postures are held for 3 to 5 to 10 minutes, as connective tissue responds best to a long steady hold.
The hips, pelvis and lower spine are the focus of the majority of the postures. By paying special attention to these areas of the body, Yin yoga helps prepare the body for seated meditation.
Yin is a great compliment for those that practice Yang styles of yoga or for those looking for a quiet practice. This is a wonderful way to explore the subtleties of the body and breath.
This class is appropriate for all levels.
